Chinese actress Li Bingbing did not appear at a world premiere held in Tokyo, Japan yesterday for the Hollywood video game-based action movie "Resident Evil: Retribution", raising speculation that her absence was a demonstration against Japan's claim of a disputed island, Hong Kong's local tabloid newspaper The Sun reported.
Li, who plays Ada Wong in the movie, was said to show her stance over the escalating dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu Islands by pulling out of the premiere.
Li's agent Ji Xiang said that Li had been informed of the premiere two months before but she was too busy in Beijing to attend at that time. Meanwhile, Ji did not deny that politics were involved, saying: "We are in line with our government – the Diaoyu Islands belong to China. Bingbing will be attending movie premieres held in other places across the world and she skipped the Tokyo leg only."
Li co-stars along with Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) and Michelle Rodriguez (Avatar) in the fifth installment of the "Resident Evil" franchise, which is written and directed by Jovovich's husband Paul W.S. Anderson. Li's role is crucial to the story and is believed to a stepping-stone to Hollywood.
Jovovich, her Japanese co-star Mika Nakashima and director Anderson showed up at the Tokyo premiere, cheered by hundreds of enthusiastic fans.

Chinese actress Li Bingbing will star in Realm, a new film from Chinese production and distribution company Fundamental Films and Stan Lee Global Entertainment.
The plot of the film is being kept under wraps but is based off an original idea from Lee, the mind behind some of the world’s most famous comic book characters including Spider-Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and the X-Men.
“What a kick it has been to create our first Chinese female superhero, and an empowering one at that,” said Lee. “It has been such a fun experience bringing to life an international woman character, and the ability to do so has been different from anything we’ve ever done! I am thoroughly enjoying every minute of it.”
Alex Litvak (Predators, The Three Muskateers) will write the screeplay.
Bingbing will also produce alongside Gill Champion from Stan Lee Global Entertainment, and Gregory Ouanhon of Fundamental, who will oversee production on behalf of their companies. Fundamental’s Gary Glushon will executive produce.
“Stan Lee’s imagination has brought the world some of its most iconic pop-culture stories and characters. It gives us incredible pleasure and excitement to present his latest creation,” said Mark Gao, Chairman of Fundamental Films.
Binbing’s recent credits include Resident Evil: Retribution, Transformers: Age of Extinction and Zhongkui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal. She’s also attached to The Nest as both an actress and producer. Bingbing is managed by Fundamental Talent outside of China, with UTA repping her in the U.S.
