Lily and her stylist Danielle Goldberg worked closely with Holstein on the spectacular dress, which more than meets the 2022 Met’s “gilded glamour” brief thanks to all those crystals. “The process of developing, making, and refining Lily’s look was very organic, a natural collaboration from first sketches to final fittings,” the designer explained. “We followed our shared instincts around the theme, and the result is a completely custom dress that managed to exceed both of our highest expectations.”

“Cate is such a generous designer, she wanted to make sure that I felt beautiful and confident,” Lily said of the collaborative approach. “It’s a classic piece, off the shoulder, with a beautiful train that was inspired by a gown Cate saw in Venice,” says the model. Feedback from Lily’s nine-year-old daughter, Dixie, confirmed the finished result was fabulous. “We had a fitting in Nashville and my daughter was with me. When we saw all the crystals, we were both screaming!”

According to Holstein, Lily’s gown was “partially inspired by the craftsmanship and precision I witnessed by European artisans at the Homo Faber exhibition in Venice this past April. Another focus was ensuring that the dress’s 170,000 crystals and 180 hours of craftsmanship enhanced its fundamental fluidity and complemented Lily in a way that made her feel elated – instantly and powerfully.”

In America: An Anthology of Fashion, is the theme of the exhibition the gala celebrates, which is built around the tenets of American style.

Holstein – who has previously described the Khaite woman as “strong, feminine and discerning” – took inspiration from American heroines (think Jackie Kennedy and Katherine Hepburn) when establishing her label, and now counts some women who fit that bill as clients. The Duchess of Sussex chose Khaite for a rare public appearance at the Invictus Games in The Hague last month, and queen of the bonkbuster (and Vanessa Traina’s mother) Danielle Steel, 74, is a fan of those cult jeans.
