Ashley Karst National Recreation and Geologic Area
What is the Ashley Karst National Recreation Geologic Area (NRGA)?
The Ashley Karst NRGA received this special designation by Congress in March of 2019. The designation is part of the John D. Dingell Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act. The purposes of the designation are to, “conserve and protect the watershed, geological, recreational, wildlife, scenic, natural, cultural, and historic resources” that are located within the NRGA.
The Ashley National Forest is preparing to develop a management plan for the Congressionally designated Ashley Karst National Recreation and Geologic Area.
A public meeting was held virtually on December 8 with presenters from the National Forest and Uintah County. Items discussed during the meeting include:
- What was the purpose of the designation?
- What does the designation include?
- What are some of the unique features of the Ashley Karst NRGA?
- How can you assist in the development of a management plan?
- A brief period of questions and responses.
To view a recorded version of the presentation, please the Ashley National Forest Facebook page. Alternatively, the meeting was also broadcast by Channel V6 and the recorded video can be viewed on their webpage by clicking here.

Final Environmental Impact Statement and Draft Records of Decision for Greater Sage-grouse Conservation
Forest Service Issues Final Environmental Impact Statement and Draft Records of Decision for Greater Sage-grouse Conservation
The Intermountain and Rocky Mountain Regions of the Forests Service incorporated standards and guidelines for the conservation of greater sage-grouse into forest plans in 2015. After two years of implementation and monitoring, the Forest Service identified new information that could be used to improve the clarity, efficiency, and implementation of the 2015 Greater Sage-Grouse Plan Amendments, in order to benefit greater sage-grouse conservation at the landscape scale. During the development of a draft Environmental Impact Statement, comments were requested from the public and were used to create proposed revisions to greater sage-grouse plans for forests in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. Most of the content of 2015 plans remained, but changes were proposed that incorporated new information and attempted to improve the efficiency of plan implementation. The Final Environmental Impact Statement can be found here, and draft Records of Decision can be found at the links for Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming. The publication of the final Environmental Impact Statement on August 2nd, 2019 begins a 60-day objection period that cannot be extended. After the objection period, which is described in the Records of Decision and in the Federal Register, the Forest Service will attempt to resolve any remaining concerns before creating final Records of Decision. Members of the public may examine interactive maps of habitat management areas using a web tool.

Arkansas has fired defensive line coach Jermial Ashley, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette’s Tom Murphy first reported Sunday and 247Sports college football analyst Brandon Marcello confirmed. Ashley just wrapped up his first season with the Razorbacks, replacing former defensive line coach Derrick LeBlanc from coach Sam Pittman’s inaugural staff with Arkansas.
"Jermial Ashley will be coaching our D-line," Pittman said last February when the Razorbacks introduced Ashley as a new assistant. "He's from Tulsa. Obviously you saw what Tulsa did as a team, and a lot of that correlates to the defensive line, the way they played. Basically, I did not know Jermial, but I watched tape after tape after tape, trying to find our new d-line coach. I love the way his kids played. Heard some outstanding things about him when I called and asked different folks about him. So, I'm very, very pleased to have him. Obviously he'll have Oklahoma connections and Dallas connections for us in recruiting."
Ashley was eager to get started.
"First and foremost the opportunity with (defensive coordinator and associate head) coach (Barry) Odom and coach Pittman," Ashley said. "The people that I knew that really had a relationship with those guys spoke very highly of them and had nothing but great things to say about them. Me being a person in this profession when you can surround yourself with great men and great people I think you are putting yourself at an advantage for success."
Arkansas’ defensive line struggled this season, finishing 13th in the SEC in sacks (24) and ninth in tackles for loss.
The Razorbacks also allowed 153.8 rushing yards per game, which graded out as the ninth worst mark in the league. Defensive linemen Tre Williams, Zach Williams and John Ridgeway combined for 11.5 of Arkansas’ 24 team sacks. Tre Williams led the way with six sacks of his own.
Both Tre Williams (Missouri) and Ridgeway (Illinois State) transferred to Arkansas ahead of the 2021 season. Ashley had a direct hand in bringing both to Fayetteville. He also helped the Razorbacks land 2022 LSU transfer Landon Jackson, an edge rusher with a grade of 90 in the 247Sports transfer portal rankings.
Prior to joining Pittman’s staff, Ashley was the defensive line coach at Tulsa for six seasons. He helped the Golden Hurricane post one of the AAC’s most impressive defenses in 2020 while allowing just 333 yards per game. That mark ranked second in the conference behind Cincinnati.
Ashley was the defensive line coach from 2013-14 at Trinity Valley Community College, which served as his first experience as an on-field coach.

He broke into the coaching field as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma State from 2010-12, working primarily with the defensive line. Ashley was a two-time All-Big 12 selection playing defensive line at Kansas from 2004-05.
