Родилась будущая актриса в семье талантливого певца Рэймонда Гиллана. К семи годам Карен прекрасно играла на фортепьяно и планировала пойти по стопам отца. Но позже появилось новое увлечение, девушка заинтересовалась психологией. Однако все это было временно, пока ей не предложили роль в школьном театре.
Сцена настолько «поглотила» Карен, что она оставила и музыку, и психологию. Она переехала в Лондон и там стала посещать уроки актерского мастерства в Академии «Italia Conti». В это время девушка подрабатывает в шоу Кевина Бишопа.
Через время высокую Карен с выразительными чертами лица замечают модельные агентства. В качестве модели она работала на Лондонской недели моды, а также участвовала в показе «Изысканных кукол Николы Робертс».
Дебютом в кино стали съемки в сериале «Ребус: Висячий сад». Далее было еще несколько картин, но они не принесли желаемого успеха актрисе. Все изменилось в 2008 году, когда на экраны вышел телесериал «Доктор Кто». Эта картина принесла Карен ряд престижных наград. Среди них и «Женщина года», и премия SVX, и National Television Awards.
